An adult relative once told me that dinosaurs never lived on Earth.
He was 100% serious. He claimed that meteorites had brought dinosaur fossils to Earth and embedded them in Earth’s crust. Given the vast amount of evidence contradicting this idea, you might wonder how this is even possible to believe. His worldview didn’t allow for evolution or dinosaurs to exist. The depth of his belief in creationism and young earth blinded him to contrary evidence.
So what gives?
There are excellent explanations in psychology. Two related concepts, cognitive dissonance and knowledge shields clearly explain what was happening with my relatives’ beliefs. More broadly, they shed light on why changing beliefs is so difficult. Beyond these psychological theories, changing beliefs often leads to personal consequences like losing relationships and social circles, and stepping into uncertainty. While this process can be harrowing, the rewards can be some of life's greatest “blessings.”
